Winston Churchill: His Humor and Appetite

Winston Churchill

January 24, 2015– Dear Secret Diary, I am a huge fan of Winston’s Churchill’s humor.

I know that doesn’t make me unique.

What makes me unique is that… well, I’m unique.  Just like all of us are unique… just like each snowflake is unique.  By the way Diary, don’t you think that it is an incredible waste of time and effort that they make every snowflake a custom snowflake?  If they were all the same, nobody would know the difference.

Anyway, back to Churchill.  The United Kingdom’s great leader also possessed an amazing wit to go along with his wisdom.  Books on the topic include The Wit and Wisdom of Winston Churchill and The Wicked Wit of Winston Churchill.

Churchill loved his food and drink, and just like some of my favorite stories on this Site are Food/Drink stories, some of my favorite Churchill stories are also about food and drink.  Before sharing some with you, I do need to point out that some feel that Churchill didn’t say some of the things he said.  Oh well.

From the latter book listed above:

1) “I neither want it [Brandy] nor need it, but I should think it pretty hazardous to interfere with the ineradicable habit of a lifetime.”

2) “Always remember Clemmie [his wife], I have taken more out of alcohol than it has taken out of me.”

3) I couldn’t find the reference, but I recall reading about the time when Churchill left a dinner party feeling that the portions had been way too small.  At the door, the host invited Churchill to come dine again, and the story is that Churchill responded, “By all means, how about right now?”
