When Showboating Goes Wrong

A few months ago my good friend, a lawyer, finally made his dream come true: After many years working for different law firms he was finally opening his own law office. So we were talking all about work and he was telling me what kind of tactics and policies he was planning to follow so he could attract new clients.

After an hour of talking and as I was getting ready to leave, a gentleman walks in the office, and my friend decided to put his plans into practice immediately. He winked at me with a sneaky smile and grabbed the phone pretending to be talking with a rich client to show off:

“Mrs. Doyle, I know you are a busy woman and have a couple of thousand employees to think about but, unfortunately, I can’t take your case at the moment. I am way too busy and swamped with work. Please try to hold this case back for a month and call me then so I can help you.”

He then hung up and looked at the potential client waiting for him and, with his most professional look, asked him kindly, “What can I do for you, sir?”

And with a big smile the gentleman replied, “Not much, sir. Actually I came to help you. I’m from the phone company and I’m here to connect the phone you were just talking on.”
