Dog Chases More Than Its Tail

Our odd little dog was first named “Shorty”, for his stout legs holding up his large body. Later we added “Herman” after a friend of a friend.

I remember playing with Shorty Herman and having a great time, but I think my father has different memories.

Long before cell phones and social media, Shorty Herman had his own opinion on what one should wear when going outside.

Dad was home sick one day with a horrible stomach virus. Upon yet another unfortunate trip from his bed to the bathroom, Dad encountered Shorty Herman. Perhaps Dad decided to let the dog out simply to do his own business but Shorty Herman had other ideas.  Setting his mind on getting Dad out of the house instead, and without giving Dad sufficient notice to dress beyond his underwear, Shorty Herman proceeded to get Dad out of the house and down the street wearing just his jockey shorts.

To this day Dad has never revealed exactly how Shorty Herman outsmarted him, but I still get quite a laugh picturing the little dog chasing my nearly naked sickly Dad down the street away from his home and towards a very busy intersection as if rushing to a finish line.
