The Smoke Alarm That Never Ends

Uncle Joe, my fiancé’s Mom’s youngest brother, truly wins the award for character of the family. Joe is well known around our city for his antics going back to school days when the family came over from Italy. He now drives about town in his hyped up car as if a character out of ”American Graffiti” talking and schmoozing.

Joe is always asking us over and we enjoy visiting with him listening to his stories. Whenever we are at his house there is the constant sound of a smoke detector going off. This smoke detector from purgatory is actually one of Joe’s African Greys, a beautiful parrot and part of his family of birds. It seems that one day the home’s actual smoke detector went off. With either Joe being away or just ignoring it, the horrid buzz continued for a long time allowing the mimicking bird to pick up and perfect the sound.

Unlike most smoke detectors this one is impossible to pull out the batteries in order to stop the horrid sound. This would turn most people batty but Joe has learned to live peacefully with it; I think making and drinking wine helps him. So now whenever we are visiting with Joe there is a lot of shouting to make conversation over the unending sound of the ‘smoke alarm’.  Of course, there’s a lot of drinking of the homemade wine, too.
