Preschool Dreamboat

Most of my memories about preschool are general: I remember circle time, my teacher playing a guitar while we sang, and falling off of various pieces of playground equipment.

One recollection, however, is clear. Although preschoolers aren’t known for their romantic charms, I was smitten at age five. I don’t know why, and I don’t know how, but one of my classmates had me under his spell.

While previous days had seen me endeavoring to play blocks near him, force him into dress up clothes, and worm my way into an adjacent seat at the lunch table, this all came to a head at one particular story time. Having successfully found a seat next to my crush, I ignored our teacher’s story; I had more important things on my mind. Without any subtlety whatsoever, and with the rest of the class in full view, I leaned over and gave this boy a nice big kiss on the cheek.

“Ewww!”

“Teacher, look what she did!”

“Gross.”

The rest of the class put me in my place as my teacher fixed me with a disapproving look. Shaking her head, she moved me to a spot on the other side of the circle. “Danielle, that’s not ok. We don’t kiss each other during story time.”

My object of affection wiped his cheek with the back of his hand, mortified. Such are the trials of young love, I suppose…
