My Valient Steed

dog

Some have horses, others have dragons. I have a 110-pound dog called Buster.

Buster suited all of my needs as a child-the most important being my need to ride him barebacked everywhere.  Luckily I was a tiny child, and he was a massive black Labrador without an impatient or spiteful bone in his monstrous body.

But when I say barebacked, I mean barebacked.  It was more than Buster not being outfitted with a saddle and stirrups. I was bare.  That’s right, I rode my dear pet naked as a babe. I suppose it wasn’t too shocking, I was around the age of four and five when I did this, but the pictures are certainly disarming.

My parents thought it was cute, which is why there is photographic evidence of my boldness. I would often shout things like “Mush! Mush!” as if he were a husky dog. He just sat or tottered around patiently, as if we were bound by oath, and he was destined to serve me.

This charade of mine was adorable at first, and tolerated after awhile.  By both Buster and my family.  I broke an unspoken rule however, and the practice was banned. I’d like to think I grew out of it, but I know deep down I would still do it if I was able.

The straw that broke the camel’s back was when I gleefully paraded into the middle of a wedding anniversary sans clothes atop our mammoth of a dog. Not a big deal, right? My grandparents were more than happy to stop celebrating fifty years together to witness such a spectacle, but my parents turned beet red at the sight of my indecency.

I was ushered from the room, and poor Buster who was just following orders was put outside in the dog kennel. I was even banned from eating cake. My heart was broken at the time, but years later I’m told I was the life of party. Lesson learned: It pays off to be risky!
