Lions, Tigers, and Government Workers, Oh My!

government

A couple of years ago the powers that be in Washington DC were threatening to shut down the government. I was visiting my friend who is the Chief of Staff for a local Assemblyman as she made a phone call to their office at the state capital to shed some much needed humor on the somber situation.

She jokingly told her office staff member that the Government was implementing an emergency plan requesting government employed volunteers to head immediately to the National Zoo in order to feed and take care of the animals in case the shut down takes place. This staffer was used to the warped sense of humor often bantered between offices so upon hanging up the phone my friend went on to continue the work day believing that the staffer got the joke.

But the staffer apparently took the plea seriously, trying to arrange for a group to meet up to drive to the nation’s capital’s zoo. When he called the Chief of Staff back to tell her he was ready to go, my friend told him that it was in jest to brighten up the situation at hand. We all laughed imagining the government shutting down and then members literally jumping into the Lion’s Den to feed the animals.
