Jon the ATM

NaypongFreeDigPhotoA former boss of mine, Brian, was shooting a commercial for WeHadAMoment.com, and he asked if I could help out.  As a graduate fresh out of film school, I jumped at the opportunity.  The lead actress’s name, for the purposes of this story, was Emma Encore.  (And if you think that’s crazy, her actual name was even crazier.)

For one of the scenes in the commercial, Emma Encore had to take money out of an ATM.  We obviously couldn’t do take after take of her actually taking money out of an ATM (actors don’t have that much money), which is where I came in.  Four years of film school didn’t prepare me for standing off screen and handing money to an actress on screen.  But even still, I nailed it.

While we were filming the scene, Emma and I were joking back and forth and laughing a lot.  She seemed really interesting, and I felt like we were really hitting it off (you could even say, we had a moment).  Once the shoot ended, Emma Encore and the other actors left, while the crew and I headed out to a bar for some drinks.

With a couple of beers in me, I had the idea to call up Emma Encore and see if she’d like to join us.  Brian got her number off of her headshot.  I plugged the numbers into my phone, and waited for her to pick up.

“Hello?” She sounded lively and jovial.

“Hi, uh, Emma?”

“Yes?”

“Oh, um, hi, it’s Jon, the ATM…?” I trailed off.

“Oh, yeah! Jon! Hi, how are you?”

I barely hesitated. “I’m great.  Just wanted to say I had a great time on the shoot and, well, me and some of the crew are grabbing some beers downtown. I was just wondering if, you know, you’d like to join us and hang out a bit.”

There was silence on the phone.

“Oh, that’s really nice Jon, but….” she whispered, “I’m married.”

I immediately imagined her and her husband, sitting in their pjs on the couch, watching the food network, finishing up their home cooked meal of salmon fillets and mixed greens; ready to share the half pint of frozen yogurt in the freezer.  Uhhh, awkward.

My new rule upon first meeting any potential future date is to get a look at their left ring finger. Emma wasn’t wearing a ring at the time, but later Brian told me she had one on and he had instructed her to take it off for the shoot.  So my other rule; don’t date actresses.*

*I often break this rule.

Jonathan, I hate to question the moment, but as the recipient of a fake phone number along the way and some not entirely believable “I have a boyfriend” responses to date requests, I do have to ask if you verified Emma Encore’s marital status on Facebook or otherwise?
