The Fallen Stock of Pokemon Cards

pokemonLike many preteen children, I had my fair share of silly fads while growing up. Yo-Yo’s, Jynco jeans, legos, and gelled hair were among my obsessions. None however stung me as bad as the Pokemon card bug.

I was a ruthless neighborhood negotiator of trades, tournaments, and sessions of oogling over our binders upon binders of cards. I knew (or so I thought) the trade value of these items. Trade a holographic Blastoise for a first edition Mewtwo- throw in some less rare cards to make the trade more appetizing. I could talk Pokemon trades with the best of them- but it only occurred to me that I might be sitting on a pot of gold when my close friend bought a price guidebook of Pokemon cards.

The timing could not have been better. I was getting a little too old for the cards, middle school was closing in fast and I wanted to spend more of my time on my new obsession: roller hockey. I devised a plan, sell the cards and spend this new found fortune on extremely nice hockey skates and gear. I even budgeted out a few extra dollars to buy my mother a nice coat for driving me around to the hobby shops and sporting goods store.

I had my prices set and was ready to move on with my life. I walked into that hobby shop expecting to walk back out with stacks of hundred dollar bills and a huge smile plastered upon my face. Then reality sunk in. The card shop owner didn’t want any of my cards, he had doubles and triples of my cards- all except one.

The card he wanted was a first edition holographic Charizard card– one that I had puked on only a few weeks earlier. My mother, sister, and I all scrubbed that card dry and put it into a plastic case hoping that it wouldn’t be noticed. Now it was the only card that was being noticed. He looked it up and down and said, ”I’ll give you twenty bucks for this one”.

Deal. I walked out of the store with my binder at my side and a twenty in my hand. A summers worth of lawn mowing got me the skates I wanted, but I learned a very valuable lesson that day- Pokemon card price guides are worthless.

Zachary Tomasik About Zachary Tomasik

Zachary Tomasik is 5'11", ruggedly good looking, has a charming wit, lives with his parents, and was single for a long long time. Now I've got a really great girlfriend that probably is too good for me, but she hasn't figured that out yet. I like running, reading about running, science, and eating. Healthy food of course being that I'm really fit. Duh. I could mention that I'm a tad insecure but that has probably been well highlighted by the majority of my bio. Carry on.
