Dad’s Voicemail

voicemail

When I was younger, I never saw my dad as a person with a history of his own before me. He was just a family man.

A few years ago, my perception of my dad really changed. On a rare occasion my entire blended family of siblings and parents gathered around the coffee table after dinner. The conversation was lighthearted, largely about my younger sibling’s goofy antics. Then my dad started to talk about how his childhood was so different growing up in Africa.  He told us about his many efforts to flee his homeland, his capture and experiences in an Arab prison, plus many more riveting stories I never knew.  He talked for a very long time, and I listened so intensely to him. He was quickly becoming one of the most interesting people I never knew that I already knew.  Over the next few weeks whenever my dad called I was thrilled because I had so many questions I wanted to ask. I was excited to get to know him in such a different way.

Then one evening my brother called me laughing:

“Hey, what’s up, what‘s so funny?”  I said.

“Oh not much, just wondering if you’ve heard dad’s new voicemail greeting?”

“No, I didn’t know he changed it from the automated one…what does it say?”

He started laughing more.

“It says, ‘Leave me a message and I’ll GET you back.’”

My brother broke down in giggles while explaining, “Dad was trying to be like me and say I’ll hit you back!”

I started to laugh so hard.

Our father, in his attempts at using our lingo, unknowingly threatened revenge on callers merely for leaving a message.

Such an intriguing fellow with a novel-worthy life, and yet he still managed to be just dad to us.

About Nicki Singh

I am Nicki Singh. I have 2 dogs and 1 husband...I acquired them in that order :) I enjoy writing with pens, so I am forced to scribble over terrible first drafts ... I have a Bachelors degree in Business Administration. Then I went back for a Masters degree in Ed. Leadership, oh how I love to learn new things. I spend most of my time working in the business world of management, so I love to write and paint every chance I have. I prefer NPR radio over most TV. But all in all I love to laugh at my mistakes, I love my family, and most of all I love coffee in the morning and sci-fi movies at night.
