A Christmas Surprise

surprise

I have always gotten endless joy out of all the arts and crafts my kids have brought home from school.  The best part is seeing how excited they get about their macaroni necklaces, finger paintings, and everything in between.

A particularly special day was when my oldest son, Zachary- a second grader at the time- brought home something wrapped carefully in newspaper.  It was around Christmas time, and his face lit up as he carried the delicate package into the kitchen.

“What do you have there Zach?” I asked.

“It’s a surprise for you!” he giddily replied. “You have to wait until Christmas.”

I could tell how excited he was about it; he was bouncing up and down in his boots.

“Can I have a hint?” I asked, playing into the excitement.

Zachary beamed.  “Ok, I’ll give you two hints,” he said, “It’s gold, and it’s an ornament.”

I tried to suppress my laughter.  Nevertheless, on Christmas Eve, I was very surprised to unwrap the newspaper to find that Zach had made me a gold ornament! We still hang it on the tree to this day.
