Last year, my husband and I went to visit family in Chicago and to meet the newest member of our family, our nephew. When we arrived at my sister-in-law’s house, there was so many family members there that I didn’t get a chance to visit with my nephew for a couple hours initially, but I could hear him nearby in another room. Everybody could.
After making the rounds catching up with most of the adults, I finally made my way over to get a close up my sister-in-law and her husband who were having trouble getting my nephew to take a nap. I guess with all the excitement going on around him, he couldn’t help but get worked up. He just got louder and louder. Everyone who held him tried to calm him down, but he just kept on fussing.
Finally, my sister-in-law had had enough. For some reason, nothing she or her husband did would work to get my nephew to go to sleep. My sister-in-law knew he was tired, but I guess my nephew didn’t want to leave the party. When my sister-in-law needed to run up to her bedroom to get my nephew’s favorite sleeping toy, she handed my nephew off to me. Presto, he stopped fussing instantly. Being careful not to jinx anything, I slowly sat down propping his head up, and began talking to him in a soft tone of voice. I don’t know if it was the tone of my voice or if he was just worn out, but he just fell asleep. As everyone watched me in action, my husband shouted, “all hail the baby whisperer!” My nephew opened his eyes and started to cry. Thanks dear!
